Symrise Research Confirms Anti-Irritant Plant Extracts
The research team at Symrise has succeeded in proving the anti-irritant efficacy of several plant extracts via screening on human skin cells. The plants with the greatest potential were investigated to determine their ability to suppress the production of interleukin-1 alpha and prostaglandin E2. Based on these findings, Symrise recently launched two state-of-the-art lines of botanical extracts: TCM Extrapone, which draws upon traditional Chinese medicine, and Ayurveda Extrapone, inspired by traditional treatments from India. Symrise’s extensive efficacy tests showed that plants with powerful anti-irritant properties included witch hazel, as well as Lonicera japonica (Extrapone honeysuckle flower), Pueraria lobata (Extrapone pueraria root), Sophora japonica (Extrapone sophora flower) and Cyperus rotundus (Extrapone nutgrass root). Lonza Launches Geogard Ultra Cosmetic Preservatives
Lonza, Allendale, NJ, announced the launch of Geogard Ultra, a new product to meet increased demand for alternative cosmetic preservatives. With growing concerns over traditional preservatives such as parabens, Geogard Ultra provides a single solution for companies seeking alternatives to traditional preservatives. The product’s global regulatory acceptance, broad-spectrum activity and multifunctionality means it can be utilized in a wide variety of cosmetic products such as shampoos, lotions and skin creams. Unlike traditional cosmetic preservatives, it can be used in cosmetic products that are marketed in major markets around the world including Europe, Japan, North America and South America. According to the company, this new product helps prevent spoilage by utilizing less aggressive “Hurdle Technology.” Instead of a harsh, aggressive approach with bacteria and fungi, Geogard Ultra primarily functions by creating a more hostile environment within the formulation for microbes to overcome. Not only does it provide greater utility with its multifunctional action and effective protection against product spoilage, but it can also increase the skin moisturizing capacity of the formulation. Silicone-Based Thickener Offers Multiple Formulation Benefits
The new Dow Corning RM 2051 Thickening Agent is a ready-to-use polymer in a silicone base that thickens and emulsifies, while imparting recognized silicone properties such as smoothness without a greasy or tacky feel. Available from Dow Corning’s Beauty and Personal Care business, Dow Corning RM 2051 Thickening Agent is a water-in-oil emulsion of aqueous sodium polyacrylate in dimethicone. It is useful in a variety of personal care applications including skin care, sun care, color cosmetics, leave-on hair conditioners and hair styling products. The new thickening agent contains an inverting agent (trideceth-6), which helps bring the polymer into contact with the aqueous solution of a formulation. When the emulsion is added to water, the polymer expands immediately into the water phase to thicken and stabilize the formulation. As the formulation thickens, the oil phase ingredients are emulsified and stabilized. The new material carries the INCI designation sodium polyacrylate, dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, trideceth-6 and PEG/PPG-18/18 dimethicone. The thickening agent is a useful solution for formulating with elastomers, gum blends and other difficult-to-emulsify silicones. It is also compatible with formulations containing a wide range of mineral and organic oils, esters, sunscreens and vitamins. Dow Corning RM 2051 Thickening Agent can emulsify and stabilize oil phases up to 50%. It can be used in formulations with high solvent content (e.g., up to 30% ethanol, isopropyl alcohol or acetone) or up to 50% glycerin or propylene glycol. Website: www.dowcorning.com/personal care.

Rohm and Haas Introduces Thickener For Surfactant-Based Products
